The Kennedy Brothers Speak
Massachusetts’ own John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy are known for their oratorical charisma. This course looks at the rhetorical dynamics of three of the Kennedy brothers’ most famous orations: John F. Kennedy’s 1963 American University Address, Robert Kennedy’s 1968 announcement of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ted Kennedy’s 1980 Democratic National Convention address. All three mark both an end and a beginning for each Kennedy as they moved forward with their political lives. Discussion will examine the rhetorical dynamics and legacy of each address and their impact on American political culture.
This course is part of the Boston Cultural Icons Series.
