North Hill’s Empty Bowls project will raise money for Needham’s Food Pantry

Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists and crafts people in cities and towns around the world to raise money for food related charities to care for and feed the hungry in their communities. North Hill’s Empty Bowls program will raise money for the Needham Food Pantry.

Residents and team members will work together to craft 420 bowls in celebration of North Hill’s 42nd anniversary. Like the Yarn Bomb project of 2024, Empty Bowls will engage residents, team members, and the broader Needham Community, allowing participation at any level of ability.

How We Got Started

North Hill’s future is guaranteed by its past. In 1979, visionary Jarvis Farley used his training as an actuary for the greater good. Older residents of the Needham-Wellesley area were beginning to think about retirement, but where? Babson College was looking for ways to increase earned revenue, but how?

Farley had a vision for how to meet these complementary needs and devised an innovative plan. A new non-profit would be incorporated to lease 59 acres of Babson land and build a state-of-the-art Continuing Care Retirement Community.  Farley and like-minded citizens made the vision manifest and brought the first Life Care contact to new England

Meet Joanne

Joanne Marshall’s life is a living testament to the power of faith, resilience, and service. Rooted in the values nurtured by her Christian upbringing in Raleigh, North Carolina, Joanne grew up in a home where compassion wasn’t an occasional act but a daily practice. Her parents opened their doors and hearts to children bereft of homes and care.  On holidays, their house overflowed with warmth, food, and love. One of those children, an eight-year-old named Linda, became family in every sense, adopted as Joanne’s sister and woven into the fabric of their lives. Joanne's life is a continuation of her parents' expansive generosity
