Elizabeth H. Handel, M.D.
Elizabeth Handel, MD began her professional life as a college professor at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, PA and is published poet.
At age 35, she decided to make a career change and embarked on a path to becoming a physician. Upon completion of her residency, she joined an internal medicine practice in Needham in 1987, and three years later established her own solo practice in Needham.
Dr Handel retired after 34 years in 2021. During the course of her practice years, she enjoyed getting to know her patients, including many members of the North Hill Community who visited her office on Highland Avenue.
Dr. Handel is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, and holds an MFA in creative writing from Cornell University. Her poems have been published in The Paris Review, The Greenfield Review, The New Orleans Review, and The Hollins Critic.
Dr. Handel received her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and served as Chief Resident at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was an active member of both the Newton-Wellesley Hospital (now MGH-Brigham) and the Glover Hospital (now BIDMC) medical staffs.
