Elizabeth Handel


Elizabeth H. Handel, M.D. is an experienced internist who ran a private practice in Internal Medicine from 1987 to 2021. She held multiple leadership roles at Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital in Needham, MA, including Past Acting President and Secretary Treasurer of the Medical Staff, as well as Chief of Medicine in 1997 and 2006. Additionally, Dr. Handel served as a clinical instructor at Newton-Wellesley Hospital's residency program. Dr. Handel earned her M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed her residency at Montefiore Hospital, where she was Chief Resident. She also holds an M.F.A. in writing from Cornell University and a Bachelor’s degree in English Composition from Mount Holyoke College. Outside of medicine, Dr. Handel has taught English at multiple colleges and published poetry in esteemed journals, including The Paris Review, Hollins Critic, Greenfield Review, and New Orleans Review.
