Walter Armstrong

Walter Armstrong’s involvement with North Hill began in 2016 as a member of the Board of Advisors. He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2017.

Mr. Armstrong retired recently after serving for 14 years in the position of Senior Vice President for Capital Facilities and Engineering at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), one of the Harvard Medical School affiliated teaching hospitals. Reporting to the President, Mr. Armstrong was responsible for master facilities planning, space planning, design and construction of new and renovated facilities, engineering of plant and building systems, maintenance, security, environmental health and safety, environmental sustainability initiatives, and real estate.

Prior to joining BIDMC, Mr. Armstrong served for eight years as Senior Vice President at CDM, a global environmental engineering and construction firm, where he headed the firm’s program management practice. From 1986-1999, Mr. Armstrong’s career was dedicated to the cleanup of Boston Harbor, recognized as among the nation’s most polluted water bodies. Mr. Armstrong served progressively as the Deputy Director for Program Controls and the Deputy Director for Engineering before assuming lead responsibility for the project in 1992.

Prior to moving to Boston in 1986, Mr. Armstrong spent the early part of his career working on public infrastructure projects in New York City.
Mr. Armstrong has been an active member on a number of non-profit boards, including the BID-Needham Board of Advisors, the Charles River School in Dover, and the Longwood Medical Energy Collaborative.

Mr. Armstrong received a Master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University in 1977. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and English from Boston College, awarded in 1973.
